Prepare Better – Together with Faster – Webinar Slideshow   by Danny disoza

Your voice and your slide show are definitely the two things you’re banking on the most to employ your webinar audience. And because as humans we’re much more visual than auditory, your slides become much more important. They are don’t just a visual aid back, the speaker; they could be the visuals. This means they have to be even more engaging, attractive and appealing than in the face-to-face presentation.

However, the problem is everything you show in your webinar has to be sent across the Internet for a participants. Even though most of them will have broadband connection, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll have very fast access.

Unfortunately, this means many of the things that first one thinks of in enhancing your move show simply won’t job, because they will end up too slow when viewed via the internet:

Full-size photographs
Interesting changes between slides
Animated movement to illustrate a point on a slide
Video within a slide
You have to work diligently to simplify your slides as much as possible so they are sent efficiently to your participants. If you don’t, it will take a long time to load each slide, that can frustrate your audience and break up the flow of your presentation.

Ironically, the best slide framework for Internet use could be the very bad but all too-common format of slides containing nothing but bullet points! Why? Because these slides contain a whole lot of blank space with several squiggly bits (the letters) on them. The webinar technology could easily compress this into a very small file to send across the Internet.

Here are some specific tips and ways to ensure you can affect a happy balance, to help you design visually attractive slides which can be still fast enough to transmit for your participants in a web seminar.

Eliminate waste

If something is for a slide purely for attractive purposes, remove it.

This applies especially to photos, which are often made use of (appropriately and tastefully) to provide impact to a principles. But something that successful in a face-to-face presentation may be too slow in a webinar.

Shrink Pictures

Many professional presenters have discovered not to build the amateur style of slides, full of text and bullet points; together with instead use attractive pictures. It seems a shame to lose these visuals just because you’re performing a webinar!

Fortunately, there’s some sort of happy balance: The solution is to keep the pictures, but make them smaller so they are sent more quickly via the internet.

Use icons

An a lot better option, if appropriate, is to apply clip art and icons (stylish clip fine art and icons, of path!) rather than photographs to make your point using diagrams.

Not surprisingly, you shouldn’t use this old, tacky Microsoft Show Art collections! There are generally many professional alternatives offered – search Google for “royalty free clip art” together with “royalty free icons”.

Fix the backdrop

Remove any fancy graphics inside backgrounds of your slides. A plain one-colour background is best – no graphics, virtually no textures, no company custom logo design, not even a decorating pattern. It doesn’t matter what colour you choose, as long as it’s a single colour throughout. That process, the webinar software can compress it in to a small packet for sending via the internet.

Stop movement

Of path, you should remove any sort of animation that’s there purely for decorative purposes. But I assume you’re skilled enough not to use such an animation anyway.

However, it’s best to carefully examine all many other animation, even if it’s at this time there for functional purposes, and consider how to remove it. The less animation you choose, the faster your slideshow will load.

“Build” slides

There is one type of animation that is acceptable – and very useful – for webinar slides, and that is the idea of a “build” or a “reveal”. This is simply where you retain adding bits to a slide when you talk about it.

Fortunately, this doesn’t cause any problems in any respect for the webinar software programs. Because each step is just adding to what’s already there, the software only has to transmit the bits that have changed on the screen each time – and that’s really fast.

So go ahead together with use these slide “builds” for your heart’s content, without worrying about any adverse influence on your webinar. In fact, it helps your presentation, because – as using use in face-to-face presentations – your audience only sees what’s relevant to them when.

Remove transitions

The same goes for transitions between slides. They are almost always unnecessary (even if they were being used thoughtfully to suit the flow of your presentation), and they will slow down the webinar display, so remove these.

It doesn’t matter how simple or complex this transitions are; they all involve movement, and that’s the killer as much as webinar speed goes.

Be especially careful if you’re using the presentation tool Prezi, which will allow you to zoom around a “mind map” of your topic. It looks very impressive in a face-to-face presentation, but it’s terrible for webinar use.

Your visuals can still be attractive!

Even if you take the knife for a slides using the guidelines above, it doesn’t mean you’ll end up with a bland, boring number of slides. You’ll be surprised only how attractive you might still make your slides, even with these restrictions.
